Police step up hunt for Selsey alleyway attacker

Extra patrols will be in place around Selsey tonight as police continue to hunt a man who dragged a female driver into an alleyway.

Members of the public have been coming forward with information and some possible names after a major appeal was launched.

Police are continuing to appeal for help in capturing the attacker, and have asked home and business owners in the area with CCTV to come forward.

Detective inspector Dave Grover said: “We are continuing to support the victim who is understandably still shaken by her ordeal and specialist officers are working with her to see if there is any more she can tell us about her attacker.”

At around 8.30pm on Wednesday, July 22, a 21-year-old woman was driving in Fontwell Road in the town when a man waved to her and signalled for her to stop.

He told her there appeared to be a problem with her car but when she got out to check her vehicle the man grabbed her and dragged her into an alleyway that runs between Fontwell Road and Gillway, police said.

The victim managed to fight the man off and got back into her car to escape.

The attacker fled down the alleyway towards Gillway and police have described him as white and wearing a cap and tracksuit bottoms.

Crime scene investigators have spent the day searching the alleyway and nearby gardens for anything that could identify the attacker or where he went.

Extra patrols are in the area tonight, Thursday, July 23, to help with house to house inquiries and to reassure the public.

“We have received a number of calls and emails from members of the public with information, including some possible names for the attacker,” DI Grover said.

“We are working through each of those reports and taking statements from the people who have contacted us.

“We’re very grateful to all those people and would continue to ask anyone who has any information to contact us.

“We would particularly like to speak to anyone in the area who has CCTV outside their home or business that shows someone who fits the description of the attacker last night.

“If you have any information, please call us.”
