Developer reveals plans for the Hippodrome theatre in Brighton

Developer HIPP Investments took on the historic site a year ago after plans to convert it into a cinema fell through.

The plans for the site, which has stood empty since 2007, include the restoration and refurbishment of the theatre, and include a 74-room hotel with a spa as well as 26 apartments.

Aized Sheikh, CEO of HIPP Investments, said: “The Hippodrome is an iconic building with an incredible past and, if left unchecked, will be lost to future generations who will never be able to appreciate its history and splendour. We hope to create a theatre that will become a cultural mainstay for the city for decades to come, in an area that is in dire need of regeneration. “A strategic plan for the refurbishment of theatre is being drawn up including timescales for a phased development programme. Ultimately, our vision is for the Hippodrome to be run as a non-profit entity by professionals who understand where it will sit amongst Brighton's theatres.”

The owners said they are in discussion with Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival regarding the renovation, refurbishment and future management of the theatre and have appointed ARUP, a multinational engineering and design company with extensive experience in the arts and culture sector, to conduct a viability study of the theatre and its future potential.

HIPP Investments said it will start the restoration of the original theatre façade and dome, working with LCE Architects, when planning permission has been granted.

In the first phase, a steel structure will be built to prop up the existing dome and façade to provide support to the building, developers said.Two public consultation events will be held in mid-February, where full details of the plans will be revealed. Dates and details to be released shortly.
