The event will bring local architecture, development and planning professionals together to explore a range of development sites, chosen by the city council, with the aim of producing design solutions for each.

Proposals will be put together by design teams, made up of five or six professionals and students. Each team will work together on one relevant project and consider practical issues such as proposed routes and connections, building functions, structural forms and public spaces.

Cllr Julie Cattell, Brighton and Hove City Council’s lead member for planning, said: “We’re looking forward to seeing the proposals for the city’s future and will be listening carefully to the community’s input to guide the future development of Brighton and Hove.”

The event, the City Charrette, is a partnership between Design South East, Brighton and Hove City Council and Design Brighton.

Design South East coordinates the designPLACE review service for Brighton and Hove City Council, bringing together a panel of independent, built environment experts to review major development proposals. With an overall ambition to improve design standards, an annual design workshop known as a ‘charrette’ is run as part of this service with an aim to involve the wider community in the debate.

This year’s charette, the third of its kind, will be run in collaboration with Design Brighton – organisers of the new urban design festival due to take place in October 2019. Founded by the Cowell Consulting Group and Stickland Wright Architects, Design Brighton aims to position Brighton as a world-class urban design centre.

Festival co-founder John Cowell said: “We are thrilled to see the best creative minds come together with the community to resolve the city’s urban challenges. We can’t wait to help establish and strengthen Brighton and Hove’s rightful place as one of the key creative hubs for development in the UK.”

Final proposals from the charrette will be presented at the event and exhibited at the official Design Brighton launch at the i360 on October 24.
