Proposals for a controversial 40-storey tower at Brighton Marina could be shelved as fresh plans for the site will be unveiled next month.

The new architects for Phase 2 and 3 of the outer harbour development will reveal their designs after an ‘extensive review’ of the proposals.

Planning permission was granted for the entire project in 2006, which included 853 flats in 11 buildings ranging from six to 40 storeys at the site – although there was opposition from campaigners, including a High Court battle which developers ultimately won.

The first phase of the development was completed in March 2016, and includes seven new restaurants and just under 200 new flats at the West Quay.

Following the appointment of the new project architects Squire & Partners, a spokesperson for the developer said: “We are drawing up draft designs which amend and improve on the existing planning consent for this part of the marina, delivering high quality, new private and affordable homes in a scheme which better connects with Brighton and Hove and enhances the marina as a whole.

“We want to open up attractive spaces to the public and residents, with access to the waterfront all the way around the site for people to enjoy views of the sea, the city and back into the marina waterfront.”

The fresh plans are currently under wraps, but residents can view the new proposals at Malmaison hotel in Brighton Marina.
