Grants totalling more than £36,000 have been approved to deal with flooding in three West Sussex roads.

The money, from the Operation Watershed Active Communities Fund, was granted on Thursday (November 17) to schemes in Maxwell Way, Crawley; Findon Park Road, Findon; and the Tinwood Lane/A285 junction, Boxgrove.

They will receive £19,119.46, £9,267 and £8,472.33 respectively – a total of £36,858.79.

The Maxwell Way scheme will see gullies installed of both sides of the road as well as repairs being carried out and road markings added.

A spokesman for the Tinsley Lane Residents’ Association, which applied for the grant, said: “Maxwell Way floods whenever there is significant rainfall causing pedestrians to get soaked whenever a vehicle drives through.

“This localised flooding is still happening even though the highway drainage [was] cleared in autumn 2021.

“Road surface is being damaged due to standing water not draining away.”

Findon Parish Council aims to have a soakaway and two gullies installed along the narrow, rural Findon Park Road.

A spokesman said the lane had ‘absolutely no road drainage’, adding that surface water flowed along the road for around half a mile to its junction with the A24.

As for the Tinwood Lane junction issue, Boxgrove Parish Council said it was prone to surface water flooding which was dangerous to passing traffic and pedestrians crossing the road.

The council was granted more than £20,000 through a previous application but said adjustments needed to be made.

These will include installing two new manholes and a soakaway.
