MORE than 500 signatures have been gathered against a traffic calming plan for Felpham.

The names were collected in just five days after a stormy session at which residents and traders made their feelings known.

Milestones owner Fred Boulton said he was delighted by 515 names, with a few more to come, on the petition sheets.

“We have gone through the 500-name target that I wanted. It just shows the strength of feeling on this matter.

“I didn’t find one trader in the village who wanted the proposed scheme to go through. But I know some people didn’t want to sign because they didn’t think it would make a difference. So, we could have got more names.”

Copies of the petition will soon be presented to West Sussex and Felpham councils.

It was important to do that, said Mr Boulton, even though West Sussex had deferred work on the project from its intended starting date last Thursday until next year.

“The councils need to know what people think about the matter,” he said.

As reported, the £500,000 works are intended to stop motorists using Felpham village as a rat run and encourage through journeys on the new Felpham relief road.
