Prison for man spitting at Worthing school children

A MAN caught swearing and spitting at four-year-old school children was told his actions were "unbelievable".

Paul Hickey, 43, whose address was given as the Salvation Army, in Crescent Road, was given an 18-week prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to a public order offence and breaching his anti-social behaviour order.

Worthing Magistrates' Court heard how Hickey swore and spat at the four-year-old school children in the playground at Heene First School, in Norfolk Street, on Thursday, October 15, while on a drinking binge.

Prosecutor, Melanie Wotton, told the court Hickey had started shouting through the school fence at the children, before using abusive language at a teaching assistant who asked him to go away.

Mr John Naylor, representing Hickey, admitted his client had a "drink problem" and had been on a drinking bender for more than 12 hours before he went to the school.

Hickey has said he has no memory of the incident.

His actions meant he breached an ASBO given to him by magistrates in Basingstoke, which lasts until March, 2012.

Magistrate Philip Everest sentenced Hickey to 18 weeks in prison for the two offences and said: "The kids were young children of four-years-old, which must have been incredibly frightening for them '“ it is quite unbelievable."

Hickey also pleaded guilty to being drunk and falling asleep in a flowerbed in Arundel Road, Littlehampton on August 27.
