Public asked if Pavilion Gardens should be sealed off at night

Antisocial behaviour at the Royal Pavilion Gardens could the popular site close at night, the council said.

More than 20,000 incidents of antisocial or criminal behaviour had been recorded by security in the gardens during 2017, and the council said it may have to take measures to protect the heritage site from harm.

This comes after the gardens were listed on Historic England’s ‘at risk’ register last year over fears the site could be ‘damaged beyond repair’.

Now the Brighton and Hove City Council is seeking views from residents on the future of the gardens.

Cllr Alan Robins, chair of the tourism, development and culture committee said: “The Royal Pavilion Garden is well loved by those who work there and care for it, those who live or work near it and by residents and visitors and it is our responsibility to make sure we look after and plan for this unique free open space so it can be enjoyed by future generations.

“That’s why we are encouraging everyone to take part in the survey and share their views.

“By working together in this way, we can make sure that money and time are invested where they are most needed and that our unique historic garden remains a wonderful, safe and relaxing space for everyone.”

The council said it is ‘committed’ to ensuring the garden remains free and accessible to all, and called it ‘one of the most important green spaces in the city’.

More than five million people visit the gardens each year, and the council’s survey is set to seek views on many aspects on the site, from planting, seating and walkways to attractions and events.

But it will also ask whether a boundary should be created so that the garden can be secured at night.

The consultation runs until June 29.
