Pupils use pavilion for inspiration

Working Our Way 2 has brought together artists, teachers and pupils to use the pavilion as a catalyst for creative thinking in education.

Eight projects were devised by artists and teachers drawing on the pavilion's programme and curriculum subjects.

Pupils visited the pavilion and used the space to gain inspiration.

The results, a fusion of art, history, geography, science and much more besides, can be seen in the pavilion's education studio.

The programme represents a partnership between the pavilion, the Bexhill Consortium of Schools and Creative Partnerships Hastings and East Sussex.

Work includes prints and pictures of Sidley, 'cut up' poems using exam papers, textile work on mythical stories, expressions of movement and stillness using ICT techniques on photographs, improvised historical drama, story books and 3D works.

Students used a host of other techniques too, all of which are on display.

Inspiration was gained from recent exhibitions in the pavilion's galleries such as the Grayson Perry curated Unpopular Culture and the work of Kenneth and Mary Martin.

Pavilion head of education Polly Gifford said: "The one thing that really came out of it was the pavilion is a site of multiple inspirations and you can have so many creative responses.

"It gives us an idea of how the building can be used in different ways to inspire people.

"As well as the curriculum it also benefits creative learning which schools are keen on. I think the teachers, artists and ourselves got just as much out of it as the students."

Pavilion officials are now planning to use the work to provide an online resource for schools across the country.

The exhibition was funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Creative Partnerships Hastings and East Sussex, the Bexhill consortium and the De La Warr Pavilion.

It can be seen from noon to 5pm until September 27. The studio is open for group visits from 10am.
