'Quick thinking' of lifeguards praised after pier jumper rescued in Brighton

Lifeguards and lifeboat volunteers rescued a man who jumped from the Palace Pier and was unable to swim back to the beach yesterday (August 7).

The RNLI said lifeguards were already on-scene when it received a call at 5.40pm to the incident.

The man was reportedly holding onto lifeguard rescue boards waiting for assistance from the lifeboat.

The lifeguards managed to swim the casualty over to the lifeboat where he was brought onto the boat and given first aid by the crew.

Following his jump from the pier the man clung onto the stanchions to help him stay afloat, which resulted in him obtaining some cuts on his arms, legs and chest, the RNLI said.

Brighton lifeboat volunteers made their way back to Brighton Marina where the man was handed over to South East Coast Ambulance Service.

Helmsman Daniel Gurr said: "The quick thinking of the two lifeguards and the quick launch of Brighton lifeboat saved this man’s life, without the combined actions of the cities lifeguards and volunteer crew this could have had a very different outcome."
