CRISP MORNINGS: The crisp dry days we had for a short while went down well with most people, but I was glad I no longer have to drive on icy mornings but can snuggle up in a comfy bed listening to the radio.

VEGETABLES: In the raised vegetable bed in the garden, the chat potatoes I must have left in have been coming up all over the place and as I needed to dig and turn it over, I was most surprised to dig up about 8lbs of really decent sized potatoes, which cooked very well. I had my doubts thinking they were probably frosted, but they were fine.

SEAFORD: Driving along Seaford seafront at the weekend I noticed the car park was pretty full and wondered how it would be in the summer if it was taken for building houses on.

WRITING: I heard on the radio that Saturday was National Handwriting and Letter Writing Day and it was a nice surprise to hear people phoning in to say they still wrote letters, cards etc and loved to get letters. I love handwriting and it’s all I do to communicate with people, apart from the land-line phone and the occasional mobile phone call. I consider handwriting a great art and a very personal way of keeping in touch with people. My relatives in Canada say they love my letters and really look forward to them.

PANTO: It was Panto time in Rodmell last weekend, and I had friends to lunch on Sunday and then we went to the 3pm performance. I hope to give it a write-up for the next Parish Pump.

BIG BAND: Our pub has the Big Band, which almost fills up the pub, coming on Friday February 5 at 8.30pm. This should be a very good evening but it may be difficult to get a meal that night unless you’ve already booked.

WI: The talk at our January WI meeting on Tuesday January 19 on Secrets of Brighton Pavilion, was well attended and much enjoyed. It’s so good to have things going on in the village on winter’s evenings, especially for those who don’t drive or can’t drive at night, as we don’t have an evening bus service so can’t get to theatres, cinemas etc.

MOBILE PHONE: When I mentioned using my mobile phone earlier on, it would probably surprise people to know that £10 on it lasts me around a year, as I can’t stand being one of those people that keep using them whilst in company, walking or taking selfies. There is life beyond a phone – try it.
