GARDENS: The bluebells have been wonderful this year and are spreading everywhere. The verges along the roads are covered in wild flowers and are a picture. Work in the garden is hard at the moment to keep up with, as everything is growing at such a rate, especially the weeds. Slugs and snails are also in abundance and we need our hedgehogs and birds to keep them under control. Please don't put the slug pellets that are not bio-friendly down, as if the birds eat them it will kill them, as will dead slugs that have taken the chemical.

RODMELL SCHOOL: The school is still putting up a good fight against closure I believe. I did see it on the TV and it came over well as a much loved and needed school.

HOLIDAYS: Regarding the subject of parents taking their children out of school in term time, to get cheaper holidays. Surely it should be the holiday companies that should be negotiated with. I’ve spoken to a few mums who feel the travel companies are the culprits. Maybe if they put their prices up and kept them at a level for profit all year, it would help.

I can remember as a child I spent a lot of time in London hospitals and when I returned down to Sussex to school I was ridiculed by the French teacher in front of the class for only getting 10 out of 100 in my French exam. This was because I had missed out on schooling. It really left a bad feeling with me for the rest of my school days. I was not allowed to take time off school for holidays, except on the odd occasion when my father’s job meant that he and my mother had to apply by letter to the head of the school for permission and that was only ever for one week, usually later in the year. Also how would parents feel if teachers (who also have children) did the same and refused to teach for two weeks whilst they took their children off on cheap holidays?

HORSES: I loved seeing all the horses at the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations at Windsor, but I felt it would have been better if it had just been a horse show and not had all the celebrities, music and strobe lighting, which I suppose was done to please those not so into horses. The horses and riders were magnificent and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them. I have spoken since to other people who have the same opinion about the mixture of celebrities and some of the music and lighting, so it isn’t just me that viewed it in this way. One of my distant cousins was Master of the Queens Horse and actually was killed by a horse falling on him. He evidently had one of the biggest funeral processions seen in London. I have a photograph somewhere of it.

COFFEE MORNING: There will be a coffee morning on Tuesday from 11am in the village hall.

BIG EVENT: Rodmell Open Gardens, Sunday June 12.

GATWICK AIRPORT: So, Gatwick Airport is in its 80th year now. The changes have been incredible since I first travelled as a child. I can remember air-hostesses being so smart and well spoken, most looking like top models. Ladies would be dressed up to the nines to travel, with suits, high heels, handbags and in some cases hats to match, along with long umbrellas carried more for effect than rain. The pilots who thought they were the bees knees were, as I recall, good looking and smart. Men always wore suits to travel. I can always remember going to meet one of my Canadian cousins and her small daughter. I also dressed up to the nines just to meet her and she came through from customs lining like a film star in a well-tailored suit and high heels attracting a great deal of attention. It was, of course, not as busy at that time as not many could afford to fly. It seems these days anything goes regarding travel wear.
