Safety calls after second death crash

FRIGHTENED King Offa Way residents are calling for urgent safety measures.

An Eastbourne driver died and a couple were trapped in the wreckage of their home after a turbo-charged Vauxhall Astra careered off the dual-carriageway on Tuesday evening and smashed into road-side flats.

Firefighters from Bexhill and Hastings struggled to shore-up the building and free the injured couple. Desperate attempts by firefighters and paramedics to save the dying driver failed.

The horrific smash was the second fatal accident at the scene in three months. Last April a badly injured motorcyclist told rescuers at the scene he had been doing 140mph before losing control.

Police say the road is subject to more speed checks than any other in Senlac division. But residents of Gilbert House are calling for a speed camera and barriers.
