The Heritage Lottery Fund did not have enough funding for all the projects that applied, Brighton and Hove City Council said.

A crowdfunding campaign to restore the first three of the 152 arches had raised £463,947, and it was hoped the support from the community would encourage further investment from the lottery fund.

It’s estimated that the full restoration of the arches will cost £24m.

Cllr Dan Yates, leader of the council, said: “While this is disappointing, we remain positive about future funding for the Madeira Terrace.

“Last year’s crowdfunding campaign expressed the public’s desire to restore the Madeira Terrace to their former glory and we will continue to work hard to achieve this.

“Even without this funding, we are still going to restore the crowdfunded three arches and explore all avenues of funding to secure the future of the historic terraces.”

The council crowdfunded cash to renovate the first three arches at the western end of the terrace, and its looking to start work in spring.

It is also considering submitting another bid for lottery funding in March 2019.
