American Express, the marathon's community partner, is calling on the community to create 'inspirational and fun signs of encouragement’.

Beverly Sawyers, vice president of American Express, said: “Every year, runners receive incredible support from family members, friends, Team Brighton volunteers, charitable organisations and spectators who turn out in their thousands to cheer them on.

"As community partner, we’re calling on spectators from across Sussex and further afield, including many of my Amex colleagues, to get involved in a massive visual show of support for the valiant efforts of participants in this year’s challenge. Signs of encouragement along the route can play a huge part in motivating runners on the long road to the finish line.”

Favourite signs of past Brighton Marathon and BM10k runners include: “0.2 miles run, only another 26 to go”; “The pain you’re feeling right now is temporary, think of the money you’ve raised for those who are in pain constantly”; “Well done, you're going to finish a marathon today".

The Brighton Marathon runs from Friday, April 13 to Sunday April 15, and hosts the Brighton Marathon, BM10k and Cancer Research UK ‘Kids & Teens’ Mini Mile Races.

The 26-mile race begins at 9.45am on Sunday (April 15), starting at Preston Park. Runners will make their way down to the seafront before running east towards Ovingdean, then west to Shoreham Power Station, before reaching the finish line at Madeira Drive.
