Southwick schools merger is on

PLANS to create a single primary school by merging Fishersgate First School, Manor Hall First School and Manor Hall Middle School have been given the green light.

The independent school organisation committee has approved the plans to create the school, which will be split between the existing sites in Gardner Road, Fishersgate, and Manor Hall Road, Southwick.

West Sussex County Council has been working closely with the three schools' head teachers and governing bodies since its proposal to create separate infant and junior schools at Manor Hall Road was rejected by the schools adjudicator last year.

Mark Dunn, West Sussex cabinet member for children and young people's services, said: "This decision ends months of uncertainty for pupils, parents and staff and means we can now move forward in line with the other changes planned for schools in the Adur district. I am pleased we have managed to find a solution which fits in with the county council's plans, as well as the wishes of the community, to keep schools open in both locations.

"This is an exciting time for Adur's schools and I am sure, like me, the community is keen to see our 17.5million investment become a reality."

The new "split site" primary school will be run by one head teacher and will cater for children aged between four and 11, offering 60 places per year.

The new school will come into effect from September, 2008.
