COMMUNITY NEWS & REVIEWS: It is with great pleasure that we send our sincere 'Congratulations' to a well known, local resident John Moore-Bick CBE. DL. It has recently been announced that John, is the High Sheriff in Nomination for East Sussex in 2018. John and his wife Anne, who live in Ewhurst Green are both tireless supporters of the church and generously give much of their time to the wider community. So well deserved John, and again, congratulations. --- It's all quiet on the Ewhurst Parish front - Things may seem a little quiet within our lovely parish at present, not because nothing ever goes on, but most likely because so many things DO go on !. With such a wide variety of groups, clubs, society's and charity's that abound within the 3 villages that make up Ewhurst Parish, there will, no doubt, be a quiet hive of industry going on behind closed doors in the form of committees, fund-raisers and organisers diligently and quietly planning and arranging a great number of events and activities for us all to enjoy over the forthcoming months. These groups are, in most cases, always looking to welcome prospective new members, whether you wish to take up a sport or hobby and become an active member of the group, or join a more leisurely group for just friendship and company in a less hectic environment. Whatever you decide to do please do look at all the notice boards throughout the villages, in the monthly Parish News, and at the '˜flyers' placed around the village shop in Staplecross. Don't forget to also check out our own '˜What's On' page at www.ewhurst.info and [email protected] You'll be very pleasantly surprised that such a small community has such a large and diverse group of social clubs with a lot of other events also being arranged by other groups from time to time. So come on and join us.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Continuing their enjoyment and appreciation of our beautiful countryside, those intrepid travellers, the members of this popular walking group have arranged two (2) more walks for our enjoyment. Walk No: 1 is planned for Sunday January 31st and is an 8 mile circular stroll of Groombridge to Withyham. The meeting point is the ‘Junction Inn’, Groombridge, OS EXP 135. TQ531371 (SatNav TN3 9RE)

at 10.0am. There is on-street parking near the pub and this walk takes in a short stretch of the Sussex Border Path. As usual, a picnic lunch is recommended. Rita and Lionel will be your’ walk leaders’ for this excursion so for more information regarding this trip, please contact them on 01424~752452. Walk No: 2 is an 8.5 mile circular tour of Stone-in-Oxney. This outing is arranged for Wednesday February 3rd and the meeting point for this trip will be on the Main Road, in Stone-in-Oxney, near the pub and road junction. OS EXP 125. TQ940278. (SatNav TN30 7JN) at 10.00am. There will be roadside parking available and a picnic lunch is once more recommended, - always a social gathering. STAPLECROSS & EWHURST GREEN W.I: Looking forward to the speaker on this month’s agenda will be those friendly ladies, the members of the parish’s local Women’s Institute. Meeting once again at St. Mark’s church room, Northiam Road, Staplecross on Tuesday February 2nd, the meeting will begin at 2.30pm and as soon as the ‘business side’ is dealt with, the ladies can then enjoy the guest speaker for this month who will be Mr. Gary Skipsey, who will endeavour to inspire and enlighten us all with his topic “ Meals on a Budget”. With most of society being advised to ‘tighten their belts’, this topic is sure to be of great interest to the members as not only is cooking very much a part of a woman’s makeup, but the Women’s Institute, (the world over) is so very well known for it’s culinary capabilities - especially, the W.I. afternoon tea !. This is sure to be a popular event and if there are any ladies out there who would like to become members of this very friendly group of the W.I. and enjoy being a part of this happy, helpful and caring group of ladies. then why not consider joining them. Come along and take pleasure in their company, - join in and share their wide and diverse range of topics planned throughout their 2016 Programme. EWHURST, STAPLECROSS & BODIAM GARDENING SOCIETY: Following on from their successful and fun quiz evening event of last month, this popular gardening society will be looking forward to introducing their guest speaker Mr. Stephen Harmer M.A.- of Hadlow College & RHS Wisley fame. at their next evening meeting which will be held at Staplecross Village Hall on Thursday February 4th at the usual time of 7.30pm. Mr. Harmer will be telling us about and guiding us through, all the different aspects of his talk - “Gardening Through the Ages” This subject will certainly show us what has changed in the way we now ‘garden’ today. This is a fascinating insight into the ‘then & now’, and how we can now appreciate how fortunate we are to have help in the form of modern technology, with better information and equipment to assist us along the way. Along with a super raffle and a break for a welcome cuppa half-way through the evening, this is sure to be another successful date in the calender of this friendly, helpful and enthusiastic horticultural society. Another great thing is that you don’t even have to be a member of this society to attend and enjoy this talk, as non-members are charged a miserly £2:00 each but this includes a priceless warm welcome. The Programme of Speakers for 2016 looks brilliant, covering a wide range of gardening topics, so there is sure to be something that will catch your eye, and interest and hopefully, inspire you to bring out your hidden away ‘green fingers’ !. You really don’t have to be a budding Alan Titchmarsh, Charlie Dimmock or even Capability Brown to enjoy these delightful events during 2016, as there is plenty to choose from, including our three local gardening shows, with classes to suit and stimulate everyone, from the young to the not-so-young , to male and female, to those with big plans and big plots through to those who are happy with a window box. There is always, of course, the enticing horticultural lure of the summer garden visits to also look forward to. So if your fingers aren’t even the least bit green, and whether you’d like them to be or not, your company would always be most warmly welcomed at any of these meetings, so just come along and say ‘hello’. CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday January 31st Sexagesima at 9.30am This service will also include Holy Communion. Reverend Dick Dengate, who is a retired clergy in the Rye Deanery, will again conduct this service- There will be NO SERVICE at St. Giles church, Bodiam today, but an ‘Evening Praise’ service at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross will take place today at 3.30pm. and that well known lovely, local lady, Jennie Liverton, will conduct this service. We are all very grateful to both of these parish friends, for stepping in to help out at this difficult time and we hope you both know how much we appreciate your services.
