Success for Buckswood School's International Day

Hastings deputy mayor Judy Rogers opened the event and she was later joined by the mayor, Bruce Dowling ,who sampled some of the food on offer and talked to students to find out about their home countries.

Buckswood has students from 48 different nations at the school and International Day is a celebration of food and culture, as well an opportunity for students to get into their national costumes and share their favourite foods. It is all in aid of charities supporting AIDS work, sustainable agriculture and education projects in Swaziland, which the school visits every year to carry out vital charity work.

The school’s sports hall was transformed into a colourful exhibition hall with a carnival atmosphere, where visitors could take a tour of the world and try delicacies such as authentic Boerwurst and red bush tea from South Africa, Swiss raclette cheese, Dutch croquettes, Japanese sushi and Algerian chicken with lemon, all lovingly prepared by the students and teachers.

The day was organised by Buckswood acting head of languages, Wei Peirce, who thanked everyone who came and supported the day.

The event raised £1,140 for charity.
