Kit Crane, 22, began his solo 27,000km bike ride on May 2 and is now in Georgia.

Mr Crane, son of BBC Coast’s Nicholas Crane, hopes his trip will raise £15,000 for Parkinson’s UK.

He said: “After university, I decided I was going to do a big trip. I’ve always loved travel and I’ve been wanting to do something slightly different.”

By the end of his expedition, he will have travelled through Europe, central Asia, south-east Asia, Australia and New Zealand, finishing in Auckland around July 2019, where he hopes to enjoy ‘one or two beers’.

Asked why he chose to fundraise for Parkinson’s UK, Mr Crane said his uncle was diagnosed with the degenerative neurological condition in his early 50s.

There is currently no cure and two people are diagnosed every hour in the UK, with 145,000 affected in total.

“It’s become a charity close to my and my family’s heart,” he said.

“I am determined to do my part to fight Parkinson’s and reaching New Zealand will require every ounce of energy and commitment that I can muster over the next year and a half.”

Mr Crane already raised funds for the charity last year by running the Brighton Marathon and cycling from London to Venice and back.

Parkinson’s UK spokeswoman Simona Southgate said: “Kit is an incredible young man and we wish him well on his adventure.

“Thanks to fundraisers like Kit, we’re able to provide support to people with Parkinson’s when they need it most and invest in vital research to find better treatments and a cure for the condition.”
