Talk offersseeds of an idea

Not many societies are as fortunate as Felpham and Middleton Horticultural Society to have a member who is such an entertaining speaker. On Tuesday, September 25, Mr Derek Betts of the Aldingbourne Country Centre gave a talk entitled From Seeds to your Gardens.

With the help of Mr Steve Sampson, he provided an entertaining evening with the aid of some high-tech computerised photographs and video.

First he showed members how commercial buyers of seeds are able to visit a seed merchant's garden in Oxfordshire, where all the plants advertised in its catalogue are on view, arranged in display gardens, enabling the buyer to see how the plants will perform when grown.

Then he spoke about the process of growing chosen seeds and how cleanliness is of great importance.

He advised members to choose pest-resistant seeds, RHS merit, and plants that are good for helping wildlife.

Use of bio-degradable products was emphasised, as far too much plastic is being used.

Mr Betts also stressed the importance of getting schools involved with growing plants, especially vegetables, as so many young people do not know how vegetables grow.

He stressed the planting of wild flowers in selected spaces, and how this can be of benefit to good health for all.

After a break for refreshments, members were shown a video of a huge nursery where all the potting up of seeds and plants were done by robotic machinery, a truly incredible sight, hardly a human being to be seen.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 23, at 7.30pm at St Mary's Centre, Felpham, when Mr Steve Harris will speak about Herbert and Harriot Hedgehog.
