Helpers work to protect Pagham

VOLUNTEERS worked hard to bolster Pagham's beach against flooding ahead of this week's high tides.

The helpers spent a day cutting and positioning the broken concrete slabs which protect the yacht club and help to stop waves overtopping the foreshore into the low-lying area behind.

Cllr Ray Radmall, Pagham Parish Council’s chairman, was one of those who helped out last Friday.

He said: “It was fantastic work by the volunteers. We started with three and that became five.

“We worked all day. The broken concrete was stacked in layers and wedged under the remaining unbroken slab to prevent it collapsing and sliding down the beach.

“Such an event would have removed what has been quite an effective front-line defence.

“The whole repair was then buried in shingle for re-inforcement and safety.”

As reported, a series of spring tides began on Tuesday night and continue until Sunday. They peak at 6.4m tomorrow and Saturday.

The parish council’s £1m scheme to cut the Church Norton Spit and stop it forcing the tides on to the beach and scouring shingle from it is awaiting planning permission.
