A Brighton bus company introduced a new discount last week, meaning that apprentices can benefit from cheaper travel.

Those studying and working as part of an apprenticeship can purchase tickets for Metrobus and Brighton and Hove Buses routes at a 25 per cent discount, much like students in the city already can.

Metrobus commercial director, Nick Hill, said: “We’ve listened to our customers and we’ve introduced a new discount for apprentices. We’re pleased we can support apprentices as they learn on the job and study.

“Apprentices are a key part of our own business – we have four engineering apprentices in our depots – and they deserve the same discount we give to students.”

To be eligible for the discount, apprentices must present a course enrolment letter or student ID card at the company’s 1 Stop Travel shop, North Street, Brighton.

Apprentices will then be given a student Key travel card; a contactless pass that can be topped-up with discount travel tickets.

Mary Kuchina, an apprentice with Lextons estate agents, Hove, welcomed the discount as she travels by bus multiple times a day for her work.

“Sometimes I take four or five buses a day so the discount will help a lot,” she said.

Luke Sullivan, an apprentice at a council depot, said that discounted travel is ‘particularly good’ for young people on an apprenticeship because their ‘budgets are already stretched’.

The new discount came into force during National Apprenticeship Week (February 3 - 9) which aims to recognise the positive impacts of apprenticeships on individuals and employers.

More information about apprentice bus discounts can be found at the Metrobus website.
