Body found in lake near Cranleigh

THE body of a man has been recovered from a freezing lake at Wildwood Golf Club in Alfold, near Cranleigh.

It is believed that the 53-year-old man, who has not been identified, was walking his dog early Sunday morning (February 5) as the animal was located near the lake, say Surrey Police.

The force was called to the scene at 9.17am after a report from a member of the public concerned for his safety.

Officers were joined by Surrey Fire and Rescue, South East Coast Ambulance and Sussex Police Diving Team at 2pm who deployed crew into the waters to search for the man.

Sussex Air Ambulance were also scrambled but stood down on route as the service was not required.

The dive team discovered the body just before 4pm after a thorough search of the area was conducted.

“At this stage it is believed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death,” said a police spokesman.

A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance added: “SECAmb responded to a 999 call that a 53-year-old man was drowning in a lake off Horsham Road, Alford at 9.30am on Sunday, January 5.

“Teams from Sussex Police and Fire and Rescue services attended the scene but it was not until later in the afternoon that the victim’s body was found by police divers.”

A post mortem examination is due to take place tomorrow (Wednesday February 8).
