There was speculation on social media on Monday morning (December 21) that police had set up a roadblock on the A259 close to the Pevensey roundabout to stop vehicles travelling in and out of Tier 4 areas.

Hastings and Rother went into Tier 4 on Sunday but the rest of East Sussex remains in Tier 2. Those living in Tier 4 are not allowed to travel out of the area and people should not travel into Tier 4 areas.

A spokesman for the police confirmed ‘there is not a roadblock at Pevensey’.

Police said: “The public are asked to ensure they are aware of the guidance for movement between Tiers and only travel into and out of these areas for essential reasons.”

There has been police presence in the area stopping vehicles but this is due to Operation Dragonfly, the force’s Christmas crackdown on drink and drug driving.

Police said there would be a step up in patrols to ‘encourage the public to continue following the rules’ surrounding Covid-19.

A spokesman added: “You will see us out and about in town centres and shopping areas. Officers will be engaging with the public to explain the rules and encourage them to follow them.”
