He is Christopher John Smith, 53, of Chichester Terrace, Horsham.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said a post mortem examination revealed that he died from a medical episode.

The incident, Operation Mendip, is now being treated as a sudden death rather than a road traffic fatality, the spokesperson added.

Mr Smith collapsed in Tower Hill, off Worthing Road, shortly after 10am, police said.

Paramedics, members of the public, and an off-duty doctor tried to resuscitate him, but despite their best efforts he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed near its junction with Christ’s Hospital Road while emergency services dealt with the incident.
