Planting power by youngsters is helping to transform a North Bersted estate.

Eighteen young people, aged three to 14, helped the Trees estate live up to its name by planting more than 20 specimens.

They were helped by members of the Trees Estate Residents' Association, staff from Arun District Council's parks department, PC Kris Ottery and council contractor ISS Waterers.

The planting took place to increase the horticultural interest on the estate and give the children the chance to learn the correct way to plant trees.

Daphne Fisher, Arun's community parks officer, organised the event. She said: 'We planted oaks at Oak Close, tamarisks at Tamarisk Close and hollies at Holly Court as well as a range of other native trees and shrubs.

'The children seemed to enjoy their task and worked well together to finish the work very quickly.'

Residents' association chairwoman Gez Watson said the planting was the start of a long-term growing project.

This will see youngsters growing their own fruit and vegetables.
