The problem occurred along a pathway in Albion Way at around 9.30am today (Friday July 29).

Southern Water sent an engineer to look at the issue.

He told the County Times the manhole was owned by British Telecoms (BT).

He said the drain had flooded with rain water and BT engineers had pumped it out into the road so they could carry out repair work.

The water was believed to be stagnant rain water, he added.
