VIDEO: Mural of teenage talent in Eastergate is unveiled

A BRIGHT modern mural now hangs proudly inside Eastergate Village Hall thanks to a group of teenagers' artistic talents.

To celebrate the hall's centenary, pupils at Westergate Community School designed the artwork to compliment the series of historic murals already painted inside the hall.

The village hall, which was built in 1907 and opened in 1908, has come to be renowned for the series of grade II listed murals inside. A group of students volunteered to stay after school to sketch and paint the artwork.

Veronica Kociuch, head of art at the school, masterminded the idea for the new artwork.

She said: "We used the original historical murals as a source of inspiration and decided to feature several different locations around Eastergate including the parish hall, church and war memorial.

"I wanted the students to create a 'proper' painting that could also be left for posterity, adding to the history of the murals in the hall.

"It was really interesting for all of the students in the school to watch its progress and development over the months in my art room."

The mural was unveiled at the latest Eastergate parish meeting to huge applause.

Michael Hutton, chairman of the parish council, said: "The official opening was a great success and much appreciated by at least 50 parishioners who turned out to watch the unveiling, it was a remarkable success."
