Volunteers needed to give others a sporting chance

THERE’S a sporting theme for this week’s volunteer column, with opportunities to help out at a village games event, or at after-school sports sessions.

For more information on these and other volunteer vacancies, contact Derek Moore, Arun Volunteer Centre co-ordinator, telephone 01903 731223, e-mail [email protected] or call in at the centre on the ground floor, Bradbury Centre, 1-5 St Martin’s Lane, Littlehampton, from 9am-4pm on Mondays and Thursdays and 9.30am-4.30pm on Wednesdays.

Some of this week’s volunteer vacancies:

Helpers and judges are needed for the Angmering Games, a village sports day which is being staged next month by the Angmering Community Centre Association.

Teams of up to six people will be competing in traditional sports day activities such as egg and spoon race, sack race, obstacle course and many others and judges are needed to run some of the races, while general helpers and waitresses/waiters are required for helping to serve food and drinks.

Littlehampton charity Enable Me wants to recruit volunteers to attend after-school clubs to help raise awareness of disabilities by leading various activities and sports sessions. The volunteer will also attend meetings and take minutes.

Fun and Breaks (FAB) supports disabled children and their families in the Arun and Chichester areas by providing regular and reliable short breaks which are stimulating and enjoyable, and promote positive experiences with new friendships, social activities and supportive relationships with carers.

FAB is looking for volunteers within the Littlehampton area, to be matched with a disabled child and their family to give them a short break of two hours a week or four hours a fortnight. They take part in a variety of activities with the child whilst they are in their care, such as visiting the beach, walking in the woods, watching a film or, perhaps, baking.

A coordinator takes care to match the volunteer’s interest and skills with the child, and training is given.
