THE BELLS, THE BELLS: On Tuesday we had a group of visiting bell ringers in our beautiful eight-bell tower, ringing the London Surprise Major. The sun shone, the view to the Downs was magnificent and the sound of the bells over the village was just perfect. Thank you, bell-ringers.

BANK HOLIDAY: This weekend is Spring Bank Holiday and it’s the time when the Heathfield Show takes place. All too often this weekend is chilly with a strong wind so I’ve got my fingers crossed that for once the wind will drop and the rain will hold off. Enjoy. Also this weekend String Theory will be at the Star, playing swing led by strings, on Sunday at lunchtime. More crossed fingers for a fine day, but at least if the weather lets us down, we’ll be inside.

FLOWER FESTIVAL: There is to be a Flower Festival at St Bartholomew’s Church Cross in Hand to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. It will run from Friday June 10 throughout the weekend until Monday June 13. Hours of opening will normally be from 10am until 4pm. except for Parish Eucharist which will be at 10am as usual on Sunday June 12.

RIGHT ROYAL RAMBLE: On the same weekend, The Friends of Waldron Churches are organising a walk as another way of celebrating the Queen’s Birthday. It will be on Sunday June 12 and will go from St Bartholomew’s at Cross in Hand to All Saints’ in Waldron, beginning at 2pm. If you’d like to prepare for the ramble with lunch at The Star in Waldron you can leave your car in the village and volunteers will ferry you to St Bart’s for the start. You can also fit in a visit to the Flower Festival inside the church, (see details above).The rambling route will be mainly off-road on footpaths through our beautiful countryside around the parish with some stiles and gentle inclines and some lane walking between the footpaths. There’ll be a Royal Ramble quiz to solve as you walk with all kinds of bizarre facts about past monarchs in the answers. Accompanied children are most welcome to walk and are encouraged to take part wearing a home-made crown. There’ll be prizes for the quiz and the most regal headgear. At All Saints’ teatime refreshments will await triumphant ramblers. Tickets to take part in this truly royal event are £5 for adults, (£4 for Friends of Waldron Churches) £2 for children and family tickets £10 (£8 for FoWC members). Register in advance and save £1 per ticket and all proceeds go towards maintaining and improving our two lovely churches. To register or for more information e-mail [email protected]

OPEN GARDENS: Three beautiful gardens in the centre of the village will be open to the public on Wednesday June 15 in aid of the Friends of Eastbourne Hospital with the funds going towards a new CT Scanner. Opening hours are 10.30am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 4.30pm and entry is by donation. There will also be sales of plants, gifts, cakes and cards.

MACBYRD FLIES IN: The Rude Mechanicals Theatre Company will be starting their summer tour round the rural villages of southern England from the beginning of June. Their new play, MacByrd, comes to Waldron on Thursday August 11. The performance will start at 7.30pm in the field behind the pub and remember to bring your own chair and wear warm clothing. SERVICES: This Sunday’s morning services are both at St Bartholomew’s at 8am for Holy Communion and at 10am for Parish Eucharist. Coffee and cake to follow. There will be a wedding at All Saints’ tomorrow, Saturday, at 2.30pm. On June 5, the first Sunday in the month, morning services will both be at All Saints’ with Holy Communion at 8am and Parish Eucharist at 10am.
