BED CLOTHES: A couple of weeks ago I passed on a request for warm bedclothes for families in need who are being helped by Family Support Work. The response was terrific and I've had a note of grateful thanks to all who gave their help. Sarah Mackenzie says that she went to FSW headquarters in St Leonards last week with 20 blankets of various sizes, five or six duvets, two pillows and several items of bed linen. She couldn't get all she had been given in her car, so there is another duvet and two blankets which will be delivered this week with more promised. Thanks to everyone.

GOLDEN BELLS: Fifty years ago on January 22 there was snow on the ground as Sue Pettit and Barry Russell were married at All Saints’. The only cloud on the horizon (metaphorically speaking) was that on the morning of the wedding, Bell Captain John Frampton had to apologise to the happy couple that he couldn’t get enough ringers to ring the bells to celebrate their Big Day. Some years later, our present Bell Captain Brian Tompsett was told the story and promised Sue and Barry that when they celebrated their Golden Wedding he would make sure that the bells were well and truly rung. Last Friday was the day, and with a full complement of ringers (with even a spare) the bells rang out, not just before the ceremony but afterwards too and before a large turnout of children, grandchildren, family and friends from far and wide, Sue and Barry renewed their vows. The crowd included their son Ray who came down from Yorkshire, Sue’s many sisters, including Christine who came over from Spain and Barry’s best man arrived from Dorset. Afterwards, everyone repaired to the Star for a buffet and a good gossip. Congratulations to Sue and Barry, it couldn’t happen to a nicer couple.

DIRECTORY: Maura Fanshawe is still gathering information together for a directory of activities, services, clubs, sports and meetings available in Waldron village. She has generously offered to collect the information and part fund the publication but would welcome any offers of sponsorship to share the costs. 
The plan is to distribute it door to door round the lanes of the village and also make it available in the pub, coffee shop, church and Lucas Hall. Contact Maura by e-mail ([email protected]) if you would like information included or if you feel able to offer sponsorship.

ROAD CLOSED: I suggested last week that you shouldn’t hold your breath in the hope that the Roads Authority would carry out the promised road repairs to the Rocks and Tanyard Hill on January 25. The date had already been postponed twice since its first announcement last November. Sure enough, on Monday January 25 another new sign went up announcing that the repairs had been postponed again, this time until February 22. Watch this space...

RAINFALL: Just checked with John Chambers our village rainfall-watcher (twenty years of records kept). On Tuesday this week, with five days still to go till the end of the month, he told me that we had had 172mm of rain, that is, nearly seven inches. That makes it a little wetter than last year but not as wet as 2014 when we had 230mm in January. However, with more heavy rain threatened this week, we may yet pass that total and I’ll keep you up to date in next week’s Village News.

TRAINS: If you have plans to travel to London from Lewes at the weekend, you might well want to change them. Be warned, this means a bus journey to Three Bridges before you go on to Victoria and the same coming home.

SERVICES: This Sunday is Candlemas, the day when, traditionally, in Roman Catholic churches, all the candles needed for the following year were consecrated. The candles symbolize Jesus Christ ‘the light of the world’. This week all services will be held at All Saints’. Holy Communion will be at 8am with the President and Preacher being George Pitcher.
 Parish Eucharist will be at 10am when George Pitcher will preside and the preacher will be Peter Jameson. The service will be followed by coffee and all are welcome to stay.
 The Parish Prayer Group will meet on Wednesday at Lark Rise at 7pm. Next Saturday, February 6, at St Bartholomew’s, there will be a gathering of all couples being married this year, for marriage preparation and teaching, beginning at 11am.
