Wealden up 5.12%

WEALDEN Council has set what it believes will be the lowest district council rise in council tax in the South East.

The council has increased its element of the council tax bill by 5.12 per cent, which is below the six per cent the Government assumed would be the minimum for local councils.

This brings the district council element of the tax for a Band D property to 130.30 an increase of 12p a week. Added to this is the amount to be levied by East Sussex County Council (930.43) and Sussex Police Authority (97.74). In addition is the amount being charged by individual town or parish councils.

In recommending a budget of 15,340,000 for 2003-04, Cllr Nigel Coltman, cabinet member for finance and assets, said: 'Wealden has the benefit of prudent control of council spending over the past financial year which has enabled us to increase our reserves to 1.5million yet we have been able to continue the high quality of public services which have brought awards for waste collection, Wealden Leisure and high approval from the district auditor.'
