West Sussex floods cause road chaos

MOTORISTS faced long delays on their journey into work this morning as continuing overnight heavy rain caused widespread flooding across West Sussex.

Parts of the A27 between Arundel and Chichester were under water and the A29 north of Fontwell was closed because of flooding.

Drivers also had to take care along the seafront road between Rustington and Littlehampton, in Station Road, Angmering, and in the Yapton, Ford and Barnham areas, were roads were also affected by flooding.

With more rain predicted during the day, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to dial 999 only if there is a risk to life or risk of serious property or environmental damage.

A spokeswoman also advised people not to travel in heavy rainstorms unless their journey was absolutely necessary, and not to attempt to drive through flooded roads, adding: “The water may be deeper than it looks and may be moving quite fast. Your vehicle may become stranded or swept away.

“Pedestrians should not attempt to walk through flooded areas - even shallow water can be fast-moving and sweep you off your feet. There may also be hidden dangers such as open drains, damaged road surfaces, submerged debris or deep channels; these can cause serious injury.”
