The Funeral Service for Dorothy West will take place on Thursday 19th July at 1.45pm

Prayer Group. Meeting on the first, third and fifth Tuesday’s each month. 7.30pm at 59 Heathlands. New members always welcome. 

Working Party for Remembrance Garden. There will be a working party to help clear and tidy up the Remembrance Garden at St John’s on Saturday 21st July starting at approx. 9.30am. Everyone is welcome to help out. Please bring your own gardening tools. Thank you.

* Coffee Morning. You are warmly invited to a coffee morning in aid of the Garden Route Children’s Trust on Tuesday 17th July from 10.30am to 12 noon at Cockmartin’s Farm, Westfield Lane. Further details from Cathy and Howard Williamson.

Social Calendar – 22nd July. Please note the Pot Luck Lunch listed for 22nd July at Lankhurst Farm is cancelled. This was replaced by the lunch on 1st July for Sena and Jane.

Wednesday Bible Study. For the rest of July we will be looking at three different Bible Heroes. Each study starts at 7.30pm and, if you haven’t been before or haven’t been for a while, they provide a great taster of the study group and the Bible.18th July – Ester at Maureen Griffith’s home, 59 Heathlands, Westfield.

Book Club. The next meeting of the book club will be on Monday 23rd  July. The book is “The Road Home” by Roas Tremain. Further details from Sue Stephenson.

Friends of Westfield Parish Church Strawberry Tea. The amount raised at the Tea held on Sunday 24th June was £276.73; the best for several years. Thank you to everyone who helped at, and supported this event.

Congratulations to Betty Held who was recently awarded with a badge and certificate for completing 20 years volunteer service with the hospitals. Betty wears two hats at the hospital, she is part of the Chaplaincy team, and also Hospital Radio.

* F3. The next meeting of F3 in July will be an End of Term Special on Thursday July 26th. There is no meeting of F3 in August.

Stagecoach has announced the following changes to Westfield bus times. To improve punctuality and reliability, from Monday 10th July most bus times through Westfield have been altered by a few minutes, and during the middle of the day buses follow a different route into Hastings.

From Westfield: - Hastings buses leave 5 minutes EARLIER at 10 past the hour, except the previous 0915 which now leaves at 0902. - Buses leaving between 1010 and 1510 inclusive will OMIT Sainsbury’s altogether and go straight to the Conquest Hospital. They then continue via Silverhill and Bohemia Road to Hastings Station. These services are renumbered 341 from Tenterden or 343 from Rye. - The remaining 340 and 342 services keep to the previous route to Hastings but will not enter Sainsbury’s car park, stopping only on the main road.

From Hastings: - Departure times are unchanged at 14 minutes past the hour except for the last 3 which are 2 minutes earlier at 1617, 1717 & 1817. The journey to Westfield will take about 5 minutes longer. - Buses leaving 1014 and 1314 inclusive will go via Bohemia Road as a 341 or 343 and will NOT serve the Queens Road stop. These and the 1414 which goes via Queens Road will OMIT Sainsbury’s altogether. - The remaining 340 and 342 services will not enter Sainsbury’s car park and will stop only on the main road.

There is a new street dance class in the community hall dining room 6pm till 8pm first lesson is free then £4 a session. Also there is a new legs bums and tums class in the main hall on a Mon eves at 7.15 till 8.15 £3.50 per session.. Further information is available from Rachel Pritchard 07866 894397.

The Sedlescombe and Westfield Club of the East Sussex Disability Association (ESDA) is looking for new members.  ESDA is a charity organisation led by disabled people and provides expert advice, information and practical support.  ESDA has dedicated accessible coaches with fully qualified driver attendants providing a door to door service for members.  The Sedlescombe and Westfield Club have outings on the second Thursday of the month. Members participate in fundraising to keep the costs down, so there is simply a contribution requested towards the transport. The Westfield Hub now meets at ‘The Plough’ on Fridays from 10am-12 noon for anyone to drop in for coffee, chat, book exchange and use of computers.

Raft Race Fete Fully Booked. On the 5th August, Rye and District Lions Club will be running their 34th Annual Rye Raft Race and Fete. Such has been the demand for stalls, rides etc., for the Fete, that the Lions had to call a halt to the number that could be accommodated and the total is now over 50 stalls and other rides. On the Salts at Rye there will be a barbecue, beer tent, live music, rides for children, including a huge bouncy castle and go-carts, ice-creams and many other attractions including crafts. The fete opens at noon and there is ample car parking on the Lions Raft Race car park, which is located over the river bridge on the A259, New Road, the road towards Camber. This only costs £2 for the day, which includes a copy of the 70 page programme. The actual Raft Race starts at 2pm, subject to tidal conditions, and rafts start assembling at 12.30pm. Whilst entries are still coming in, the Lions say that a few more rafts could be accepted and entry packs can be obtained by ringing 0845 833 2825. The rafts will compete over a 3-lap course downstream form the road bridge with ample space for viewing from both the East bank and the fishermen’s quay. The fancy dressed crews on their decorated rafts bombard each other with flour and water bombs, with many spectators enthusiastically joining in. However, there is a strict ban on throwing anything hard or that could cause an injury, such as eggs or fruit. There are six different classes in the Race and the winning raft of each class wins a trophy and certificates are presented to all rafters by Hastings and Rye MP, Amber Rudd, and Rye’s Mayor, Shaun Rogers. The notable thing about both the Fete and the Raft Race is that both events are free to the public, although the Lions will be looking for donations in their collecting buckets. All proceeds from the day, including the sponsorship raised by the Rafts are donated to charity and, as always with the Lions, there are no deductions for admin. So for a fund day, go along to The Salts and River Rother at Rye on Sunday 5th August from 12 noon.
