Wonky madeira to celebrate 25 clown years

Julie Orton baked a cake to celebrate the silver anniversary of the clowns in Bognor Regis.

Her wonky madeira confection with buttercream and jam filling proved a tasty way to mark 25 years since the clowns first came to the town.

Each of its tiers was higher on one side than the other to provide an eye-catching sight.

The cake '“ worth 250-300 '“ took pride of place at the official reception in Butlins' conference centre last Friday night when the clowns were formally welcomed to the town.

Julie, who runs Cake Genie, said: "It's a very suitable cake for the clowns' convention. It's not the usual sort of cake I would make. I'm more conservative or would use chocolate, and it was quite a challenge. But I am pleased with the final result."

It took 25 hours for Julie to create the cake for 180 people. It finished five tiers high, measuring about two-and-a-half feet high. It was topped by six six-inch high clowns dressed in green, blue, red and yellow.

Made from sugar, they each took two hours to create with the help of her friend, Trudi Irwin. Their intricate decoration was reminiscent of the cloth toy clowns of old.

The clowns' bright colours were matched by the red, green, blue and yellow of the cake. Jewels and '25' in sparkling bead captured the celebration mood.

A 2ft firework candle added even more flair. Julie donated the cake to the clowns' weekend organiser, Sue Holmes, Bognor Regis Town Council's events officer, and was a special guest at the reception where, unusually, she saw her masterpiece being cut and enjoyed.

"I look upon the cake as giving something back to Bognor and the people of Bognor," she stated. "They have supported me in my business, which is in its seventh year.

"The clowns put Bognor on the map. Anything that does that has to be good for the town and bring more people here to help the businesses."
