Arundel in the hunt for BMW UK Championship title

THE finale of the Formula BMW UK Championship looks set to be thrilling with three drivers, Marcus Ericsson, Henry Arundel and Josef Kral still in the running as the series heads towards the last chequered flag this weekend.

After a fantastic season of racing that has seen eight different pole-sitters and seven different winners, three drivers have emerged as title contenders going into the final rounds of the year at Knockhill.

After a dominating weekend last time out at Brands Hatch, Rookie Ericsson re-took the Championship lead and secured the Rookie title with two poles, two wins and a fastest lap.

In what has been an amazing debut season in car-racing, the 16-year-old Swede, managed by IRL Champion and Indy 500 winner Kenny Brack, has five race wins to his name and nine pole positions.

Ericsson now has a 13-point advantage over his closest rival but, with two other drivers still keeping the title in sight, the pressure will be on.

Arundel has had an extremely consistent season racing up at the front, which has kept him in the title fight as it goes to the wire in Scotland. The 2006 Rookie of the Year has been determined to take the Championship title this year, and has put in a measured performance that has seen him on the podium 10 times, picking up his first win in Round Five at Thruxton.

The 19-year-old Brit now lies second but needs another victory under his belt if he wants to topple his Swedish teammate from the top of standings.

Kral has been playing the part of the hunter ever since crashing out during the opening race of the series back in April left him bottom of he table.

He bounced back and is currently the top 2007 race-winner, scoring six victories so far and briefly took the Championship lead before an unlucky weekend at Brands Hatch in Rounds 15 and 16 saw him slip back down to third.

Only 19 points behind Ericsson, he'll be hoping to put his Double R Racing car, sporting a cartoon Tasmanian Devil for every win he has scored this year, ahead of the rest in his final outing.

Whatever the outcome, with 92 points on offer, the stakes are high and it will be fascinating to see how the leading trio deal with the mental stress, as well as the challenging Scottish circuit, as they go head-to-head.

The man who keeps his head the most will emerge as the Formula BMW UK Champion 2007.
