Ashley leads in youngsters

Excellent packing earned the Lewes under-17 team a well-deserved team victory in the 25th anniversary Phoenix Road Races on the carriageways in Brighton's Preston Park.

The under-17 event was held over a 3.8km course and in a race that was won by the home club's Matt Barrie in 11 minutes 38 seconds it was Ashley Williams who led the Lewes team home.

Showing better form than he had at the first Sussex League event at Goodwood last month, Williams finished in sixth place in 12.19, with Nick Hearn, who is having a good season, not far behind in seventh in 12.26.

Matt Basford, who has yet to regain the form he showed over the country last season, completed the scoring trio in ninth place in 12.34 to beat the home club for team honours.

Josh Burgess had a steady run, filling 12th place in 13.21.
