Boxing club packs punch

BOWLS, cricket, rowing and football tend to be the main sports in the town and it's not often that boxing gets mentioned.

But that could soon be about to change because the ATHA Amateur Boxing Club has six young fighters who can't wait to get the new season under way.

Coach Mick Turner said: "I think it's quite an exciting time for the club. I've been coaching there for nearly six years and this is definitely the best it has been for those six years. I've got good potential there and I've just got to get them the experience."

The ATHA Showbar-based club's line-up comprises seniors Peter Mould, Seb Pender and Charlie Dain, plus juniors Perry Morgan, Arthur Henry and Mikey Simpson.

The latter is just 11 years of age, but he could well be one to watch because he is setting his sights extremely high.

Turner, who ran the now defunct Tackleway Boxing Club in Hastings for 20 years, continued: "I've been coaching since 1972 and, when I first started, my ambition was to train someone for the Olympics and this guy's ambition is to go in for the Olympics. He's the first chap I've really met who's set his heart on it."

The season will start next month and the highlight at present would appear to be Dain's entry into the Senior Novice Championships.
