Potter is still weighing up the make-up of his Albion squad before they return for pre-season but it already seems that defensive reinforcements – especially with uncertainty over Lewis Dunk – are high on the list of priorities.

Here’s a round-up of today’s news:

Welcome Matt?

Matt Clarke.Matt Clarke.
Matt Clarke.

It looks like £5million-rated Portsmouth centre-half Matt Clarke will be the first signing of the Potter era, with the 22-year-old undergoing a medical today.

Clarke had an excellent season for Pompey and will either provide back-up to the Dunk-Duffy partnership, or be viewed as a possible replacement for the former.

Webster in the frame?

Another defender linked with a move to the Amex is Bristol City stopper Adam Webster.

Potter will know the player well from his time in the Championship in charge of Swansea City last season, but could face a fight to land the 24-year-old, with Aston Villa, Burnley, Leicester, Newcastle United, Southampton and Watford all credited with an interest in the player.

City will demand a fee in the region of £12million for Webster…but Clarke looks like a more value-for-money option.

White set for Whites?

Young centre-half Ben White is firmly on Leeds United’s radar. White, who was part of Newport County’s team that humbled Leeds in the FA Cup, has been monitored by the Championship club for 18 months, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

They report that footage of White’s performances on loan at Peterborough United last season have ‘found favour’ with Leds boss Marcelo Bielsa and that the 21-year-old is a ball-playing centre-half who would fit with Bielsa’s style and fit into Leeds’ the club’s tight wage structure comfortably.

One out the door

Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is off out on loan to Boca Juniors in the next couple of days.

The 20-year-old signed for the Seagulls on a four-and-a-half-year contract in January but as part of the deal, was loaned back to Argentinos Juniors for the remainder of the season. He’s now set for another loan stint.
