Burgess bites to land darts title

Darts star Shayne Burgess won the prestigious annual Isle of Sheppey Classic last weekend.

The Bulldog, as former world number two Burgess is nicknamed, came out on top in a field of more than 100 competitors which included some big name British Darts Organisation (BDO) players.

Burgess beat Ade Boyle 4-1 in the last 64 and whitewashed former Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) player Lionel Sams 4-0 in the last 32 before coming from 3-0 down to edge out Dan Russell 4-3 in the last 16.

The St Leonards-based thrower brushed aside Jamie Robinson 4-0 in the quarter-finals, outgunned BDO starlet Clive Barden 5-3 in the semi-finals and clinched the title by defeating Danny Pinhorne 6-1 in the final.

Forty-eight-year-old Burgess, a three-time PDC major tournament finalist either side of the turn of the century, won the Rileys London Victoria Qualifier earlier this year to book his place in the televised UK Open.
