Discus star Lally recovers from surgery to win British title

In her first competition since May, she returned with impact with a best throw of 57.37 metres.

She fought off nearest rival Eden Francis, who overtook her after her second throw of 55 metres.

It marked a great return to competition after she had surgery to remove a benign tumour from her chest.

The tumour was causing her to get the painful condition of kidney stones.

Lally’s return may be too late to get selected for this year’s World Championships in Beijing in August.

Lally said: “I won by two metres which I was really pleased with.

“It was a bit nerve-wracking but I grew in confidence as the competition went on.”

To qualify for selection to the World Championships she must reach 61 metres by July 26.

However she got even closer to her mark with a brilliant throw of 60.01 metres in a competition in France on Monday.

Lally may compete again in two weeks at Loughborough.
