First loss for Littlehampton's cricketers

CAPTAIN Benn Challen's decision to ask Haywards Heath to bat did not produce the outcome he hoped for and Littlehampton Cricket Club suffered their first defeat in the Sussex League's second division.

Heath, on their own ground, mounted 245 for nine and declared, with Hayden James making another significant innings for them with a top-scoring 79.

Littlehampton were bowled out for 173 to take 11 points and slip to second place behind Stirlands (197 for two), who won by eight wickets over Pulborough with a Sean Heather hundred.

Worthing's new No 3 bat, Jack Massey missed out on his first century for the club in his fourth league match. He was out for 92 in their 201 for six declared, and they got only 14 points after failing to bowl out St James. The relegated Brighton side were 105 for eight at the close. Worthing slip to fifth, below Haywards Heath.

The other relegated club, Chichester, look a real threat. They are tied second with Littlehampton after star bolwer last season, Fazal e Akbar decimated Bexhill's reply to 95 with seven for 37 after they had asked Chichester to bat and restricted them to 161 for nine declared.

Roffey made only four runs more, for the same wickets down, but are only one above the bottom after losing by four wickets to Sidley.
