The Seagulls got off to the worst possible start when City went ahead after just four minutes through Gabriel Jesus.

That was the only goal of the game though and Dunk praised Albion's performance in defeat.

On the early goal, Dunk said: "Everyone in the stadium probably thought it would be 5-0 or 6-0. You can't deny it but we showed what we're about at this club.

"We had to dig deep for those next ten minutes after the goal and make sure we settled down and got back to the game plan.

"It showed the game plan we had today worked. The only time we got out of position was when they scored. That's the margins."

Dunk added the team were proud of the performance they produced as they pushed quadruple-hunting City all the way.

He said: "We're gutted. We've missed out on an FA Cup final but hopefully we get another chance.

"I think we can keep our heads held high. The gaffer is proud of us and we're proud of each other in the dressing room.

"There's a down mood especially with the way we performed and after going 1-0 down so early in the game. I think the character and grit we showed to stop them creating chances was excellent.

"We need to take that into the league games.

"We had a game plan and I thought we executed it excellently apart from that one time they scored. When we went forward the boys worked their socks off and it was hard to get up and support the ball.

"We did the best we could and unfortunately it wasn't enough today."

Dunk felt City were lucky to keep 11 men on the pitch after Kyle Walker escaped a red card after clashing with Alireza Jahanbakhsh following a VAR review.

He said: "I've seen it back and I don't agree with the decision that was made. It can't be changed now and that's all I'm going to say on the situation as I don't want to get myself in trouble."
