Brighton 'a step closer' to Premier League safety but Hughton won't relax

Pacal Gross' header on 75 minutes saw Albion pick up a point and move four-points clear of 18th-placed Cardiff City.

Earlier in the day the Bluebirds were beaten 1-0 at already-relegated Fulham, boosting the Seagulls hopes of Premier League survival.

Brighton were expected to be buoyed by the result but they found themselves a goal down at the break after an insipid first-half performance.

The second-half display could not have been more different. The Seagulls were superb with substitute Solly March providing the much needed zip Albion needed.

Gross' equaliser sparked pandemonium in the stands and saw Albions' relegation fears decrease.

Hughton said: "We are a step closer but I feel my responsibility is really not to relax too much until we know we are mathematically safe.

"We have two games left. The cautious part of me has to think that anything can happen.

"Cardiff are at home to Crystal Palace in their next game. If they were to win that it gives them momentum going into their last game against (Manchester) United.

"We have to prepare the best way can for a tough game at Arsenal (next Sunday).

"It was certainly a better feeling at this moment than it was at half-time.

"It's certainly relief from what looked like a poor performance in the first-half and looking like coming away with no points.

"It was a really spirited second-half with a better quality performance that allowed us to get something from the game."
