The 29-year-old has played for 13 clubs in the Football League but kept a shut-out on his top-flight bow when Albion beat Everton 1-0 through Jurgen Locadia's goal just before the hour.

Button ensured Brighton held on to win when he made an excellent save to push a Richarlison shot on to a post shortly after the goal.

Talking about making his Premier League debut aged 29, Button said: "It’s been a long time coming. It's nice to get it out of the way and to top it off with a win was brilliant.

"It was obviously a great feeling at the final whistle. To keep a clean sheet and get the three points was obviously massive for the team. I’m really pleased."

Button was asked after the game if he thought he would ever play in the Premier League and said: "There is obviously part of you that thinks ‘is it going to come?’ but it was nice that the opportunity has come about, that the club has given me the opportunity and hopefully I can start repaying them now."

Button could have joined a Championship club in the summer and been number one but said his dream was to play in the Premier League. He knew an opportunity would come around when Mathew Ryan went to the Asian Cup with Australia and said: "I had an option to be a first choice in the Championship. Obviously I knew before I signed that the Asian Cup was going to be going on.

"It’s a bit of a dream to play in the Premier League so I backed myself to come here and to get that opportunity which has come now.

"The lads were brilliant and defended fantastically. It was nice and sometimes you get that little bit of luck to get a clean sheet and it was a fantastic day all round."
