Chelsea and Tottenham stars the most effective Premier League substitutes

Bookmaker bwin has assessed every fixture across Europe's top five leages from the last five years to discover which players are most likely to change the direction of a game.

In the Premier League, Olivier Giroud is the best impact substitution – Arsenal and Chelsea have improved their position by 11 points in the 12 games he has been brought on as sub.

Dele Alli has helped Tottenham gain eight points from his 11 substitutes appearances, while Manchester United's Juan Mata has earned more points as a sub than anyone else – the Spaniard’s clubs have earned 15 points from 25 substitute appearances.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is the worst impact substitution – his clubs have lost four points from the ten games he has been brought on as a sub.

Pedro Obiang has lost more points as a sub than anyone else – West Ham have lost six points from his 18 substitute appearances.

Bwin also looked at which managers have had the biggest influence on the end result following their first substitution, successfully earning their team more points by pointing to the bench.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is the best manager for making impact substitutions – Guardiola’s teams have gained 16.4 points per season from making subs (81 points from 188 games).

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is second best manager (45 points from 178 games: 9.6 points per season), followed by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino who has earned his teams 8.7 points per season

David Wagner is the only manager to lose points as a result of making substitutions – Huddersfield have lost four points per season from making subs, while according to the research Brighton boss Chris Hughton has not earned a point from an impact sub.
