The 59-year-old has guided Brighton from 20th in the Championship to 12th in the Premier League in four years on the south coast.

Hughton was linked with the Ireland job this week after Martin O'Neill was sacked but says his only interest is in his job with the Seagulls.

Hughton played 53 times for Ireland from 1979 to 1991 and asked about the manager's job, he said: "I can understand any link. But at this moment I have a job here that I’m desperately keen to do as well as I possibly can in.

"Certainly at this moment, for me, I have no interest in the job. The only interest I have is in the job here at Brighton.”

Hughton then added he is unsure if he would ever want to manage Ireland and said: “I know the feel of being involved with the Irish team as a player and as a coach because I was Brian Kerr’s assistant for three years.

“But at this moment I enjoy working day to day at a club like this, which is a wonderful club and a wonderful environment.

“Would I think about it (Ireland job) in future? The honest answer is I don’t know.

“Will there will be a stage in my career where I might think about international management if there’s a particular offer - or will l always want that day to day involvement? I just don’t know.”
