Spurs have been enjoying a strong season in the league but where they have been enjoying unparalleled success has been in getting the most for their money in the transfer window, however Liverpool’s recent spending makes them favourites to win the league.

Research from Free Super Tips’ study into transfer efficiency has revealed how well clubs have managed expenditure in relation to league results and performance.

Using data from this season and the previous four seasons, the research focusses on results, transfer value for money and managerial outgoings to determine how Premier League clubs have been performing on the pitch compared with expenditure in the summer and January windows.

It shows that Tottenham have blown away the competition with the club only spending £3.8million for every point achieved in the last five seasons - the best transfer record among ever-present Premier League teams, while Spurs have not spent anything so far this season and have amassed 48 points.

The record shows just how well Mauricio Pochettino has done during his tenure while potential suitors Manchester United have performed the worst since 2014. With United struggling to fill the void since Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils spent big under Jose Mourinho in a bid to return back to the glory years with spending reaching £11million for every point achieved.

Findings from the study also puts Liverpool in pole position to claim the title based on their spending habits as they have similarities with the league winners from the last four seasons.

This season, the Reds are currently on a spend per point ratio of £3million for each point, which will drop to £1.6million if Jurgen Klopp hits 100 points. No club in the last five seasons has managed to win the Premier League without a spend per point below £940,000 which was achieved by Chelsea in 2015.

Last season, despite City’s record points haul, Pep Guardiola spent £2.9million per point to secure the title, while the 2016/17 season saw Chelsea notch up a total of £1.3million spend per point and even Leicester’s historic championship came at the expense of £1.1million.

City meanwhile, will hit well below the recent target mark this season if Guardiola refuses to move in the current transfer window, with a 100-point season meaning they will have spent £640,000 for each point – a huge swing against recent trends.

Elsewhere in the league, Crystal Palace have shown excellent value in staying in the top flight with the second-best spend per point ratio across the last five seasons with £4.1million spent per point, followed by Arsenal (£7million), West Ham (£7.6million) and Southampton (£8.9million) making up the top-five best value spending clubs.

Manchester City follow rivals United as the least-efficient Premier League spenders with the Blues so far spending £10.4million for each point since 2014, only £600,000 less than the Red Devils and with City winning only one more major trophy than their rivals.

Liverpool follow next as the team with the third-worst record at £10.3million spent per point, Everton (9.6million), Chelsea (9.4milion) and Leicester (9.2million) complete the table of the league’s worst offenders.
