'Beyond question' - Jeff Stelling names Brighton star who has been 'player of the season'

Soccer Saturday host Jeff Stelling has claimed that Tariq Lamptey has “beyond question” been Brighton’s player of the season.

The full-back was a standout performer for Albion in the early stages of the campaign, but has been sidelined since December with a hamstring injury.

Graham Potter revealed earlier in the week that the defender has suffered a setback in his recovery from the issue, and looking ahead to the Seagulls' clash against Leicester City on Saturday evening, Stelling was at pains to point out just how much of a blow his continued absence could prove to be for the club.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, he said: “They had more bad news this week because Tariq Lamptey who has beyond question been their player of the season, has had a setback.

"He’s been out since December. He’s not going to be back in the near future.

"He’s a massive miss for them.”

Pundit Joleon Lescott responded: “Yeah, he’s massive for them, going forward and stuff, but again, is he going to be the goal threat they need?

"They’re creating a lot of chances, but no-one is convincing in front of goal. I don’t think they’re a team who can afford to have someone a little more selfish in front of goal, and then it detracts from their style of play.

"They may need to have five at the back and also four in midfield, and kind of nullify teams that way.

"It’s daunting for them because Fulham are playing a lot better football than they were at the start of the season.”
