The Seagulls fell behind to an early header from Kyle Bartley, but thought they had equalised when a quickly taken free-kick from the centre-back caught goalkeeper Sam Johnstone napping.

Confusion then reigned in the aftermath as referee Lee Mason and his VAR team struggled to determine whether or not the official had blown his whistle before or after the ball had been kicked.

After initially appearing to have given the goal, the man in the middle took a long period of deliberation and even went over to his pitchside monitor before disallowing the strike – much to the anger of watching supporters...

@CmC13579 tweeted: “Unbelievable. unacceptable, embarrassing, should be a goal all day, but Lee Mason interferes and then teases us… Can a ref be sent off? Embarrassing”.

@lemo216 tweeted: “So what mistake was made then exactly that had to be changed by VAR? Did the referee incorrectly blow the whistle? Not blow it long enough? Blew it in the wrong tone? Just another incompetent performance”.

@Connorbhafc tweeted: “Walk off the pitch”.
